Weekly Commentary (Updated Nov. 16, 2023): There’s plenty to digest this week following screenings and the actors out in full force after the SAG-AFTRA deal that ended the strike. However, the announcement of Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel, who will emcee for the fourth time, has awards enthusiasts excited.

This week’s Awards Circuit Column focuses on German actress Sandra Hüller, who could be double nominated for two non-English language performances in “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest.”

A24’s “The Iron Claw” debuted in Los Angeles, and could make a contender out of character Holt McCallany as the Fritz Von Erich, the patriarch of the tragic wrestling family.

Apple Original Films and Sony Pictures unveiled Ridley Scott’s latest epic, “Napoleon” which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the historical figure. Based on initial reactions, it looks to be a technical awards player at best. My best guess is production design.

Netflix has submitted Todd Haynes’ “May December” in the comedy races at the Golden Globes, which bodes well for Natale Portman in lead actress, and the film making it into their best picture category.

Most significant chart gains: Holt McCallany enters the top five of supporting actor after not charting in the top 30 at all this year. “Oppenheimer” still holds on strong with 13 projected noms including wins in seven categories.
