Rajamouli
Grand in scale, Rajamouli’s big-budget movies are some of the most successful in India. Three — “Baahubali: The Beginning,” “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” and 2022 hit “RRR” — rank among the highest-grossing films ever at the Indian box office. A Tollywood epic about the unlikely friendship between two Indian revolutionaries, “RRR” also found a large global audience once it began streaming on Netflix, earning a place on the streamer’s coveted top 10 movie list, and a sequel is in the early development stages. Rajamouli’s films are designed to appeal to broad Indian audiences, cutting across linguistic and cultural divides. “RRR,” for example, was released in five Indian languages. His next film, with Telugu star Mahesh Babu in the lead, is set to shoot in April 2023. The director recently billed it as “a kind of James Bond or Indiana Jones film with Indian roots.”
