The latest prediction from our film awards maven Clayton Davis is that coming-of-age drama “CODA” will run away with the best picture Oscar at the March 27 ceremony.I have to say that would be awfully fabulous given that everyone — me included — loves a little-engine-that-could underdog story, and this feel-good, scrappy movie filmed in a short amount of time certainly fits that bill. Heder seemingly came out of nowhere to win the 2022 awards-season race with “CODA.” A moving tale of a child of deaf adults (hence the acronym) struggling to help her family’s fishing business without giving up her dreams of pursuing a career as a singer, the film was acquired for a record $25 million by Apple TV+ at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and went on to nab Oscars for best picture, best supporting actor (Troy Kotsur) and best adapted screenplay (Heder), along with dozens of other honors from major awards bodies around the world. It was only the second feature as a writer-director for Heder since 2015’s “Tallulah,” which starred Elliot Page and Allison Janney in a dramedy about a young woman who kidnaps a child from her neglectful mother. The movie was inspired by Heder’s own stint working as a nanny.
