Perry has shown comedic mastery in everything from his career-making star turns as sassy family matriarch Madea in 11 films and numerous stage productions to the hundreds of hours of TV he churns out at his Tyler Perry Studios compound of facilities in Atlanta. He’s taken on occasional dramatic roles as well, in movies such as “Alex Cross” (2012) and “Gone Girl” (2014), and in 2022 he went deep with his Netflix feature “A Jazzman’s Blues,” which he scripted back in 1995. Written, directed and produced by Perry, it is the tragic, decades-spanning story of a romance between a Black couple (Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer) forced to separate as teens and later reunited. This year also saw Emory University introduce a course on Perry’s oeuvre.
