When Cameron closed the 2000s as the bona fide king of movies with 20th Century’s “Avatar,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe had only two films to its name. 13 years later, the director’s long overdue sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” arrives in a radically different universe for global film exhibition. The VFX-heavy fantasy franchise now shares the same owner as the MCU in Disney, though 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” still trails “Avatar” as the reigning global film champion and the latter film’s 2022 re-release still managed to break the top 40 for the year. That leaves big shoes for “The Way of Water” to fill throughout its holiday run as it sets the scene for three more entries to follow. Naturally, Cameron has still collected accolades elsewhere, such as his 2021 “Secrets of the Whales” Disney+ docuseries, which earned a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy.
